Our 17U Girls travelled south to Cornwall to compete in the OVA’s 17U Girls Bugarski Cup/Trillium. Despite their best efforts, the girls ended up 3rd after pool play, forcing a matchup against Pegasus 16U from Kingston in the crossover. An impressive straight sets victory meant the girls would need to beat Fusion 17U in order to advance with a hope for a medal. That proved too tall an order for our girls, although they did battle bravely against the Fusion assault. The 5th and last match of the day pitted Air Force against frequent rival Vikings Valhalla from Cornwall. I bet that if you asked the girls, they would tell you that this was the match they felt most frustrated at losing, as they certainly had the chance to make it two match wins for the first time this season. Both sets were close, but it just wasn’t meant to be.
According to Coach Woods, “As a coach you want your players to get better each time they step on the court, and on Saturday that was evident. It was a breakout day for a couple of Air Force players – Griffen and Kayla played their best volleyball of the year.” He added, “There was a great deal of heart and effort put out by all the players today. I feel confident about doing well at the upcoming Ontario Championships.”
Thanks to everyone who supported the team in Cornwall – especially former Flyer Grace Edwards who lent her support to the girls on the bench in Assistant Coach Laura Edwards’ absence. Thanks also to Eric Dunne for all the great photos.
